A Kentucky convenience store told customers to take off their face masks or “go somewhere else” — but later did an about-face when called out for the controversial message.

A photo of the sign outside Alvin’s in Manchester was shared Monday on Facebook by a man who said he wanted to “spread their shame” by publicizing the business’ call to flout Gov. Andy Beshear’s mask guidance, intended to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports.

“No face masks allowed in store,” the pink sign read. “Lower your mask or go somewhere else! Stop listening to Beshear. He’s a dumbass.”

Instead, the shopper’s post – which was shared more than 3,800 times – prompted some Facebook users to call him a “snitch,” and others said they saw the sign as a “patriotic statement.”

“If I didn’t live so far away, I would do all my shopping here,” another man wrote. “Finally somebody with same dang common sense.”

The store, however, later changed its message, saying it would not turn away customers who aren’t wearing face coverings.

“We are not telling you to not wear a mask,” Alvin’s wrote Tuesday on Facebook. “What we are saying is, its your choice to wear one or not, not our [government’s] choice for us. While some got the meaning behind it, [a lot] did not.”

The sign was not intended to “offend anyone,” according to Tuesday’s post.

“But we will not apologize for our beliefs in our freedom to make our own decisions, that our government wants to make for us,” Alvin’s statement continued. “We strive to keep our customers safe, and our employees.”

Beshear in late April announced his plan to start reopening business in Kentucky beginning on May 11. The Democrat also announced that state residents should start donning masks in public starting on that date, but said people would not be arrested or cited for not wearing one, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

A message seeking comment from Beshear’s office was not immediately returned.

The sign, meanwhile, has led some to consider making a 60-minute drive just to pick up lunch there.

“DO NOT APOLOGIZE FOR ANYTHING,” one reply read. “We are planning a road trip just to eat at your place.”

Same thing in Wisconsin at one of the campgrounds. If you go inside a building, it will be treated "as a robbery"

I love that he explains this by saying:

“We are not telling you to not wear a mask,” Alvin’s wrote Tuesday on Facebook. “What we are saying is, its your choice to wear one or not, not our [government’s] choice for us. While some got the meaning behind it, [a lot] did not.”

What brilliant logic. "No face masks allowed in our store, because it's your choice to wear one or not".
